Online Identity Theft
Most people are aware that identity theft can be prevented by simply being careful with the placement of sensitive documents. Bank statements, credit card applications and bills, social security numbers and cards need to be stored in a safe place where access is limited to only you. Should someone find these documents, identity fraud can be easily committed. Shred all documents that are thrown away.More recently, a growing trend of online identity theft has been occurring. Activities done online over the Internet are just as susceptible to identity theft and fraud. The advice to people is to be careful when commencing banking, credit and other financial activities over the Internet.
Some tips to keep in mind:
- Never share online passwords with anybody and always log out of your sites. Don't let identity thieves hijack your online account and misuse it to their benefit.
- Be suspicious of illegitimate sites and emails. Many identity thieves use fake emails to solicit information. Others create a mockup site to do the same. Be sure when browsing on a website that it's the legitimate source. Any websites that have misspelled domain names are scam sites. Don't enter any sensitive personal information.
- When one is out on a public Wi-Fi hotspot, be sure it's legitimate. This means that the hotspot is provided by a well known Internet Service Provider. Don't connect onto any free public Wi-Fi hotspot that you've never heard of before. It could be a hacker and he could gain access to your computer and its sensitive files when you log on.
- Make sure file and printer sharing are turned off on one's computer. Hackers can often find their way into a person's computer through these backdoor holes and find documents related to one's identity that they can use for fraud.
- Password protect one's network. Put up a firewall to block computer hijackers and identity thieves. Don't free allow strangers to browse the Internet through your network. Malicious things can be done on your network and to the computers connected to it.
- Encrypt sensitive files. There are many software programs that enable sensitive data to be protected through encryption. Identity thieves will have a hard time accessing documents containing sensitive information.
