Immigrant Credit Histories

It's easy for an immigrant living in the U.S. to build credit. All it takes is a little perseverance and time. A good credit history will see its benefits in the form of competitive interests rates on mortgages, loans and other financing activities.

To start things off, the first thing an immigrant should do is apply for a social security number. This is an important number that is used in many financial and government documents. Most bank accounts, credit cards, insurance forms, and job applications require a social security number.

The second thing to do is open a bank account with the social security number. It can be either a checking account through which one can deposit paychecks in, or a savings account. Fund either account periodically. This will show to some extent financial income.

Next, apply for a credit card. Try to apply with a major credit card company. Start making purchases with the credit card while remembering to promptly pay off each monthly statement. This demonstrates credit trustworthiness. As time passes, continued managed and timely payment history will be recorded and reported to the credit bureaus, thus establishing credit.

Credit history takes time to build. It is what it is. A history of credit related records through time. Everyone starts from nothing. Even immigrants that come from wealthy backgrounds start from scratch when they enter the U.S. Most American lenders don't recognize credit histories from other countries. So the best time to start would be as soon as possible. Don't delay.
